Week Three Concept Map
Discussion: The brain and its limitations
Whether or not our brains develop differently as a result of multitasking and frequent distraction, we do live in a world in which information overload cannot be avoided. While the experience level of the person impacted can effect the level of overload, we have all experienced it at one time or another. Students in a classroom, when set free with the internet and asked to find resources and give a presentation, may experience it almost at once. There are many resources available to us. How do we - or our students - focus on the resources that are most helpful?
Consider your own multitasking habits as you complete your initial posting. How often do you engage in multitasking (reading, checking email, instant messaging, checking Facebook)? When you multitask, how do you manage the quality of the work that you are doing? Do you multitask only at certain times during the day (week, month?) or are you constantly multitasking? If you have managed your multitasking well, how can you share your strategies (or extend your strategies) to your students?
Compare and contrast the two chapters that are provided this week, and in your initial posting, relate which chapter resonated most with you and your philosophies. Locate resources (and include them in your online repository) that support your own philosophies of multitasking, information overload, or any of the other issues discussed in these chapters.
Participation hint: Post your initial response to the reading prior to Tuesday morning. Participate in the Reading Discussion on three days during the week. Build on the responses of others by sharing new resources, asking questions, and sharing personal experiences. The initial response should contain 3-5 resources, and should utilize proper APA citation.
The Weekly Discussion is assessed with the Participation Checklist:
