Week Seven
Because of the connectedness of the world, our students have an opportunity to become engaged in politics to a greater extent than they ever have. Student values, coupled with the tools used by some of the candidates in recent elections have combined to create an interesting dynamic online. It is one that teachers can exploit! We know that this generation has a desire to create, to collaborate, to make an impact and to gain attention through their online contributions. When political situations arise, teachers may choose to harness the energy related to these situations to assist students in critical thinking, writing skills, geography, or any number of other content standards. If students wish to be engaged in these activities, we should help them to do so in a way that will leave the best impression possible online - and help them to make the best decisions in the future.
This week, we will engage in a bit of our own research. Talk to two NetGeners about their current and past involvement in activism online. What causes did they find interesting? What action did they take as a result of that interest? Why did they take this action? What were the results of their actions? Will they continue to engage in this type of activism?
Compare the results of your interview with the readings as you make your initial posting. What parallells exist between the individuals you spoke with and the assertion of the authors in our two texts? What does this mean for you as a parent and teacher?
If the NetGeners you spoke with were not active in any causes, do you believe that they are the exception or the rule? Locate resources to support your assertion.
Participation hint: Post your initial response to the reading prior to Tuesday morning. Participate in the Reading Discussion on three days during the week. Build on the responses of others by sharing new resources, asking questions, and sharing personal experiences. The initial response should contain 3-5 resources, and should utilize proper APA citation.
The Weekly Discussion is assessed with the Participation Checklist:
